One of the main tools I like to use for determining your constitution (this is what you're born with) and condition (which changes daily) is Ayurveda.

Ayurveda is a sustainable way of living and finding balance.  It’s flowing smoothly with nature, remembering our natural state of alignment and moving away from things the cause imbalance.

AYUR - means Life and VEDA - means Knowledge or Science, it helps us understand nature and how our life is affected on all levels, through emotions, foods, movement, etc.

As a constitutional medicine, meaning that we look at the body as a whole, and each person individually.  We all have different constitutions and therefore our bodies need a different, more unique way of applying healing modalities for individual balance.

Vata, Pitta and Kapha are different dosha energies that we, and the rest of the universe are comprised of and are built up of the five elements.

  • VATA - air & ethers (ethers are subtle energies in and around us)

*PITA - fire & water

*KAPHA - water & earth

We all have parts of each dosa in us.  Usually one or two dosas are dominating and their qualities will show up the most.  The qualities of the dosas relate both to our physical and our mental state.  Different kinds of food, exercise and lifestyles suit different dosas and bodies.

Originally I thought Ayurveda was was a lot of rules to follow,  what you can and can’t eat, food combinations or cooking a certain way.  It took me a while to get over myself and to accept that I do my best at every given moment and that’s enough.  Using the guidelines, I began to feel what was best for bringing balance into my body.  I began to feel the wonderful effects my conscious choices were having on my mind, body and spiritual life.

For example, I used to eat more raw foods which would often upset my stomach and cause indigestion.  Ayurveda helped me understand the soothing effects I felt when I ate more cooked foods.  It is a pure and simple science experiment that I’m in control.  The gentle signal from your body tell you to stop doing what you used to do if you want different results.

We just have to learn how to listen.  Have fun learning about yourself!
